Problem Gambling Expert: Revenues Need to be Halved28 November 2003AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: "If people were serious about reducing problem gambling, gaming revenues to operators and governments would have to drop by up to 50 per cent, a gambling expert has said. "Many measures suggested to reduce harm from gambling would not deter serious players, the director of the Sydney University Gambling Research Unit, Michael Walker, said yesterday. "But cutting the maximum bet on poker machines from $10 to 10 cents would eliminate the problem, he told the National Association of Gambling Studies conference. "…Dr Walker said a smart card with a bank-approved monthly gambling limit would be more effective because it would not affect those who gamble within their means, while stopping problem gamblers from falling heavily into debt…" |
