Problem Gamblers Call for VLT Ban

EDMONTON, Alberta – As reported by the Edmonton Journal: "Problem gamblers are among the loudest voices in the chorus calling for a ban on video lottery terminals.

"A survey of Alberta VLT users released last week suggests 58 per cent of the serious gamblers think the machines should be banned, while casual players who use them for entertainment are more concerned about the payouts.

"Recovered VLT addicts and people who work with the problem agree the province should be willing to give up at least part of the $600 million it reaps every year from the machines because they are so addictive.

"…The study of VLT players by Garry Smith and Harold Wynne found that about 40 per cent of problem VLT users played the machines to cope with life's problems.

"Ralph McNabb, executive director of the Problem Gambling Resource Network, predicted that VLT problems will increase the longer the machines are around because it is so difficult to recover from the addiction…"
