Prince George County Lawmakers Push for Casino21 January 2004MARYLAND – As reported by the Washington Post: "A group of lawmakers from Prince George's County is threatening to scuttle any legislation that would expand gambling in Maryland unless the county is guaranteed a 'destination resort' casino and a hefty chunk of the proceeds. "Members of the county's 23-member House of Delegates caucus began debate yesterday on a framework for legalized gambling in Prince George's, saying they want to make sure the county reaps as many benefits as possible if the General Assembly approves a gambling bill this year. "Among the provisions under discussion: that Prince George's be granted a license for a full-blown casino resort; that the county government receive 20 percent of all gambling proceeds; and that the county retain the authority to create its own gaming commission to regulate gambling licenses. "…Prince George's lawmakers are considered an important bloc of swing votes in the General Assembly's debate over gambling. "…[Governor] Ehrlich has said he will introduce gambling legislation in the next few weeks…" |
