Prairies Rife With Addicts to Gambling, Study Finds15 December 2003WINNIPEG, Canada – As reported by the Globe and Mail: ``Canada's Prairie provinces have become hotbeds of gambling addiction, according to a study that found almost one in 10 gamblers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba have some type of problem with games of chance. ``The leading cause of the addiction appears to be the beeping, clattering video-lottery terminal, thousands of which have proliferated in bars and motels over the past decade. ``One in four VLT players are considered 'problem gamblers,' or at risk of becoming such gamblers. ``The findings are part of a study titled Fighting the Odds, published yesterday by Statistics Canada. ``…About 1.2 million Canadians show at least some indication of problem gambling, and they tend to be poorer and less educated than the rest of the population. Aboriginals are about five times as likely as others to have full-blown gambling problems, the study found. ```Constant gambling and excessive spending can take its toll in many facets of life, particularly personal and family finances, as well as an individual's health,' the report says…" |
