Powerball Winning Ticket Bought in Minnesota16 August 2004MINNESOTA – (PRESS RELEASE)-- Powerball paid off big for one lucky ticket Saturday night. The winning ticket worth $98.7 million was purchased in Minnesota. The winner will now have to decide between the 29-year, 30-payment annuity and the cash option worth $53.1 million. The winner will have 60 days after their ticket is validated to make that decision. This is the second Powerball jackpot in a row to be claimed by a Minnesota player. Jim and Jackie Lagoon of Stillwater, Minnesota won the $21.1 million July 7 jackpot. In addition to the jackpot winner, 646,976 other Powerball players across the nation won a total of more than $4.5 million in cash prizes. The numbers drawn were: 4, 10, 11, 18, 43 and the Powerball was 41. The Power Play multiplier was 3. Three players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Minnesota and Pennsylvania (2). None of the winners purchased the Power Play option. If they had, they would have multiplied their prize by 3 for a total win of $300,000. Fifty-five players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Eleven of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $15,000. More than 74,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 3 Saturday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier. Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels. Players purchased almost 24 million tickets between Thursday and Saturday night. The jackpot for the Wednesday, August 18 drawing will be $10 million with a cash option of $5.4 million. The lotteries sold more than $2 billion in Powerball tickets in 2003. That translates into more than $600 million for worthwhile state projects. Powerball is now played in 27 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
