Powerball Rises to $215 Million

UNITED STATES – (PRESS RELEASE) -- The jackpot in America's favorite lottery game is enormous. Not only does the top prize continue to grow, but 1,381,083 lucky players across the nation won a total of more than $9.1 million in prizes Wednesday evening.

Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Wednesday's drawing the jackpot will grow to an estimated $215 million.

The cash option for the Saturday, May 28 drawing will be an estimated $121.9 million.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night were 27, 29, 31, 42, 46 and the Powerball was 33. The Power Play multiplier was 2.

Fourteen lucky players matched 5 white numbers and won $100,000. Their winning tickets were purchased in Arizona, Connecticut, DC (2), Idaho, Pennsylvania (5), Tennessee, and Wisconsin (3). Two additional players in Oregon and South Carolina not only matched the 5 white but also purchased the Power Play option for a total win of $200,000.

Seventy five players matched four white balls and the Powerball and won $5,000. Six additional winners of that prize level also purchased the Power Play option and multiplied their winnings to $10,000!

More than 124,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prizes by 2 Wednesday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your Powerball winnings from 2 to 5 times, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels.

Players purchased more than $55.2 million in tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night. The lotteries sold more than $2.2 billion in Powerball tickets in FY04. That translates into more than $660 million for worthwhile state projects.

Powerball is now played in 27 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
