Poll: Support for Michigan Gambling Proposal Slipping

MICHIGAN – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "Support is slipping for a Nov. 2 ballot proposal aimed at limiting new casino-style gambling in Michigan, despite $12 million spent so far by existing casino operators to pass the measure, according to a poll released Friday.

"The money spent on the casino ballot proposal is more than what has been spent by the two major presidential campaigns in Michigan, according to the Michigan Campaign Finance Network.

"The drop in support for Proposal 1 is probably due to Gov. Jennifer Granholm's highly visible campaign against it, said Ed Sarpolus of the Lansing-based EPIC/MRA, which conducted the poll.

"…Proposal 1 is supported by 52 percent of voters, with 42 percent opposed. An earlier poll showed the ballot issue favored by more than 60 percent of voters.

"…Supporters of Proposal 1 have amassed more than $14 million, mostly from the MGM Casino in Detroit and two American Indian tribes -- the Saginaw Chippewa and the Little River Band Ottawa…"
