Poll: Slots Favored to Fund Texas Schools18 May 2004AUSTIN, Texas – As reported by the (Texas) Star-Telegram: "As the Texas Legislature wrapped up its special session Monday with no plan for funding education, a new poll shows Texans increasingly favor using slot machines to support schools. "Sixty-seven percent say gambling should be considered a funding source for schools, compared with only 30 percent who favor a statewide property tax or income tax, according to the Scripps Howard Texas Poll released Monday. "…A $1.5 billion proposal to put state-taxed slot machines at racetracks and on American Indian reservations was rejected in the face of opposition by some Republicans in the House and threats of filibuster in the Senate. "The poll results show that opponents need to stand their ground, said Mike Hannesschlager, spokesman for the Texas Christian Coalition. "…The Texas Poll, which questioned 1,000 Texans by telephone from May 3 through May 15 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, focused on school finance…" |
