Police: Woman Killed Husband To Conceal Gambling Debt

HOBART, Indiana – As reported by the Associated Press: ``A northwest Indiana woman gave her husband a fatal dose of insulin so he would not discover that she had spent some of his savings, authorities said.

``Barbara Joy Garcia, 51, of Hobart, was charged Monday with murder in the death of her husband, Cipriano Garcia.

``…Her husband's body was found Nov. 3 near a pond in a wooded area across the Illinois border, wrapped in a tarp and tied to two cinder blocks, according to court documents.

``…Garcia, a retired licensed practical nurse, admitted to drugging her husband's coffee and then giving him a fatal dose of insulin on Oct. 30, according to court documents.

``…Garcia had a history of gambling away her husband's money, court documents said. Garcia told police she decided to kill her husband because she was afraid he would find out she had spent $4,000 from his savings account…."

``…It was not clear Monday whether the $4,000 actually was spent at casinos, [Brian] Snedecor [Hobart Police Chief] said…"
