Police Bust Illegal Gambling Den in Singapore, 28 People Arrested

SINGAPORE -- As reported by ChannelNews Asia: `` Police busted an illegal gambling den and arrested 28 people in a Joo Chiat shophouse.

``A deserted staircase was what greeted police officers from the Gambling Suppression Branch when they arrived at the shophouse at 444A, Joo Chiat Road.

``It was only after they broke into the premises, did they discover a CCTV monitoring their arrival.

`...when they opened the door under the stairs, they discovered a secret passage door that leads into a gambling den.

``The 18 men and 10 women, aged between 26 and 71, were playing "pai kow" in the room.

``...If found guilty of illegal gambling, each person can be fined up to $5,000, or jailed up to six months, or both..."
