Pokies Change Blamed for Hotels Move

AUSTRALIA -- As reported by the Advertiser: ``South Australian hoteliers are buying interstate pubs due to uncertainty surrounding future poker machine revenue.

``One of the nation's largest hotel brokers, TJ Board and Sons, said hotel sales in SA had "ground to a halt" and valuations were falling.

``The comments come as Parliament prepares to debate laws this week to cut poker machine numbers by 3000.

``Director Stephen Cropley said his company had handled the sale of five Queensland hotels to South Australians in recent months.

``He said proposed changes to gaming laws requiring gaming licences to be renewed every five years would make the future even more bleak for local hoteliers.

``...If the controversial measure passes through Parliament, hoteliers will need to demonstrate a commitment to the principles of responsible gambling and prove that they are not having an 'unduly adverse social impact on the local community'...."
