Poker Tournaments Draw Full House

5 February 2004

ARIZONA – As reported by the Arizona Republic: "Casino managers aren't bluffing when they say television poker shows are luring new players to their parlors.

"Beginning today, Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde will tap that popularity when it hosts the first tier of the World Poker Tour's Super Satellite Tournament.

"…Winners each Thursday will qualify for a March 18 second-tier event at Cliff Castle that will place up to seven winners in a Las Vegas third-tier event April 17 and a shot to qualify for the championship and a share of $5 million. First-tier play is open to anyone paying the $35 buy-in and $5 entry fee. Reservations are required.

"…While poker still ranks far below blackjack in table game popularity and profits, the tour and other televised events like the World Series of Poker are bringing new customers through the doors of Arizona's $1 billion casino industry.

"…Casino Arizona's chief gaming officer, Lee Christiansen, said the industry is experiencing a 'tournament craze,' attracting new players wanting to test their knowledge acquired from TV."
