Poker Rooms on Strip Declining

5 December 2000

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Dec. 5, 2000 – As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “…Harrah's spokeswoman Madeleine Weekley blamed a lack of customer demand for the decision to close the poker room. The Rio, the company's other Las Vegas casino, closed its poker room several years ago.

”The MGM Grand closed its poker room in January after losing space in recent years. Treasure Island's room was closed a few years ago, also because of ebbing demand.

”….Gaming expert and Huntington Press publisher Anthony Curtis said. `With the emergence of the big, dominant poker rooms, first at The Mirage and now at Bellagio, there's no big action left for the other Strip casinos.’

”…The 27 poker dealers at Harrah's Las Vegas were told Wednesday they will lose their jobs, although Weekley said all will be offered the chance to apply for other positions with the company.

”The Venetian plans to use the space to expand its race and sports book, a resort spokesman said, noting that the room was closed because of a lack of customer demand…”
