Poker machine addict who stole from charity sentenced to six years

QUEENSLAND, Australia -- As reported by The Courier-Mail: "A compulsive pokies gambler who stole more than $300,000 from one of Queensland's biggest church charities has been jailed for six years.

"Barrister Craig Eberhardt told the District Court in Brisbane, his client, Lawrence Bodin Shaw, was a perfect example of why the Federal and State governments were looking at serious problems involving gambling addicts and the poker machine industry.

"He said while a previous government had been ridiculed for not allowing poker machines into Queensland, its fears about problem gamblers had now been proved correct.

"Shaw, 53, pleaded guilty to stealing $303,139 from the Corporation of the Trustees of the Sisters of Mercy between August 21, 2004 and August 16 2007.

"The Corporation was founded by a Roman Catholic Order of nuns and has extensive charity arms throughout Queensland..."
