Poker craze hits South Australia

11 June 2007

ADELAIDE, Australia -- As reported by the Australia Advertiser: "Texas Hold 'Em – the poker phenomenon that's become a TV hit – is coming to Adelaide pubs. The National Poker League will start free Texas Hold 'Em tournaments in South Australian locals from the end of this month.

"No money will change hands during the free social, knock-out games, which amateurs and professionals can enter.

"Instead, players will use 'non-value' chips and accrue points to win prizes including overseas trips and cars.

"...More than 80 Adelaide venues have expressed interest in hosting the 'free-roll' tournaments and National Poker League director Garry Nicholson expects that number to exceed 100 by the end of this month.

"About 10,000 people could soon be playing at more than 100 tournaments each week across Adelaide, he said..."
