Pocono Slot Application Withdrawn

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Times-Leader: "Dr. Joseph Mattioli has withdrawn an application to build a $300 million slot machine parlor and entertainment complex at his Pocono Raceway track, a popular NASCAR venue that draws hundreds of thousands of fans each year.

"Operating a slots casino would have run counter to the Mattioli 'family-operated' business model, Mattioli said in a news release. The Mattiolis also own and operate a car race track in South Boston, Va., the Blakeslee Inn & Restaurant and Pocono Raceway Campground.

"…Mattioli, in a phone interview Monday, expressed concerns that bringing in outsiders to run casino and resort operations would 'take up all the jobs' that he would prefer go to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

"Mattioli's plan had called for a 200,000-square-foot casino complex, including an 80,000-square-foot stand-alone parlor with up to 5,000 slot machines, an 80,000-square-foot convention hall and 40,000 square feet of restaurants, shops and spa.

"Mattioli said the family holding company, Mattioli Company, had the $50 million letter of credit necessary to purchase a $50 million slots machine license…"
