Pocono Downs CEO: Casino Will Employ 1,000 Workers

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Standard Speaker: "The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce listened to an overview of plans for the first local slot industry, which is expected to create about 1,000 jobs.

"Mohegan Sun, which also owns Pocono Downs, has already begun construction on its second casino facility. That facility will be located in Plains but will also serve the Hazleton area, a representative of the firm said.

"Bobby Soper, president and CEO of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, said the new facility will offer more entertainment and provide more jobs to the Hazleton, Scranton and Wilkes-Barre areas. Soper said the three cities in Luzerne County will provide the casino's market.

"Soper said about 90 to 95 percent of the job openings at the casino will be filled by local people and noted that it is the company's goal to solicit local employment.

"He said that during the first phase of the facility, between 400 and 500 jobs will be created and in phase 2 an additional 400 to 500 jobs will be created.

"…He said the facility will also reach out to local vendors to purchase supplies from if the prices are reasonable.

"Soper said Mohegan, which is owned by the Mohegan Native American tribe of Uncasville, Conn., is trying to maximize its resources by marketing in the region, including Hazleton…"
