Pocono Developer Urges Support from Local Businesses

PENNSYLVANIA– As reported by the Morning Call: "A New Jersey developer with plans to build a casino in the Poconos urged local merchants and hotel owners Tuesday to support his bid, promising his project would generate nearly $400 million in direct economic activity.

"Greg Matzel, president of Matzel Development, unveiled plans for a $1.2 billion hotel and casino before about 200 people at Pocono Manor, alternately selling his vision and prodding his guests to prepare for more than 4 million visitors annually.

"…Matzel, who is seeking one of two available stand-alone gaming licenses that would allow as many as 5,000 slots, has proposed a project that includes a 750-room hotel, 300,000-square-foot retail area, 5,000-seat arena, 1,200-seat theater and 120,000-square-foot convention center.

"…Matzel, who purchased Pocono Manor in January, spoke of the trickle-down effect he expected from a hotel/casino that will employ more than 4,000 people.

"…He said businesses in the area, from antique shops to clothing stores to restaurants and ski areas, would prosper. Large midweek conventions would bring thousands seeking everything from off-site hotel accommodations to laundry service, he said…"
