Poarch Creeks stop construction of Wetumpka casino

17 October 2012

WETUMPKA, Alabama -- The construction on a planned casino in Wetumpka has been temporarily halted, the Montgomery Advertiser reported.

A press statement released by the Muscogee Creek Nation detailed the following about the ongoing situation:

"On October 8, 2012 the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Principal Chief George Tiger and Chairman Buford L. Rolin and other representatives with the Poarch Bank of Creek Indians met to discuss the adversity between the two Nations regarding the ongoing construction and expansion of the Poarch Creek casino.

The statement goes onto explain that "...construction will be halted today at 5.00pm...and will not proceed until further notice..."

The statement also explained that a meeting has been scheduled soon to discuss a resolution to the matter.

The dispute between the two tribes centers on the question of whether sacred land is being desecrated, the Montgomery Advertiser report explained.
