Planners Propose Zoning Changes to Allow Casinos

PITTSBURGH -- A casino could be located in some city neighborhoods where zoning currently prohibits such construction under a preliminary city plan announced this week.

The proposal by city planners, unveiled Tuesday, would allow a casino to be built on areas of the North Shore, the South Side and downtown that aren't now zoned for it. Only three of the seven proposed sites for a possible casino in Pittsburgh have the proper zoning.

City planners said they want to extend zoning to other areas so that isn't an issue when a plan for a casino is finalized. Under the state's new gambling law, one slots license will be given to a casino in Pittsburgh.

"The zoning already will be in place," Susan Golomb, the city's director of planning and also a member of the Pittsburgh Gaming Task Force, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "It's one less step in the process the operator will have to go through."

The zoning changes will be considered by the city's Gaming Task Force. In order to take effect, they must be approved by the Planning Commission and City Council.
