Pittsburgh Planners Try to Limit Slots

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "City planners are trying to curb the sprawl of the proposed slot machine casino in Pittsburgh.

"In a proposed ordinance setting up zoning districts for a casino, they are requiring that buildings with a footprint larger than 50,000 square feet be at least two stories in height.

"That could have a big impact on the design of the proposed Pittsburgh casino with up to 5,000 slot machines. Some experts believe that a building with that many slot machines would need at least 100,000 square feet of space, not counting restaurants, lounges or other ancillary activities.

"The proposed ordinance does not limit an operator to a ground floor of 50,000 square feet. But if the operator goes beyond that amount, he must build a second floor. He can, for example, have a 75,000 square foot first floor, if he's willing to add a second floor.

"…City planners set up requirements for multiple stories to prevent the casino, which could be the size of a Wal-Mart Supercenter, from gobbling up large chunks of urban space…"
