Pittsburgh Officials Introduce Casino Guidelines

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Review-Tribune: "Businesses that tend to sprout around gambling facilities -- such as pawn shops, strip clubs and check-cashing facilities -- would be prohibited within a 1,000-foot radius under rules proposed Tuesday by city planning officials.

"Planners also introduced guidelines that govern casino design. Gambling operators would have to provide sufficient parking, as determined by a traffic study. Lots of more than 150 spaces would be required to be multiple stories.

"All applicants would have to go through a public hearing process before the planning commission approves the location of a casino.

"…The planning commission will seek comments on the new guidelines from the Pittsburgh Gaming Task Force and the public in the next two weeks before putting it to a vote Oct. 25. City Council will have to approve the guidelines before they can go into effect.

"Last week, the task force considered proposed zoning changes that the planning commission put forth for public discussion yesterday. The changes would enlarge the area in which casinos would be permitted from the Point to the 16th Street Bridge in the Strip and Crawford Street in the Lower Hill…"
