Pittsburgh Mayor: Casino Would Change Movie

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "A casino in Pittsburgh would need a huge piece of land, and its heavy use would profoundly change the city, Mayor Tom Murphy said Thursday.

"Everyone should be thinking about the gambling industry's expected arrival, Murphy said. He's surprised the topic wasn't a central issue in the mayoral campaign, and he wants his Pittsburgh Gaming Task Force to raise public awareness.

"…The 23-member advisory panel, picked by the mayor in late March, will try to influence the design and location of a slot-machine casino as potential owners prepare bids for the state Gaming Control Board.

"The local group will hold public forums and will assess the impact of a casino on city roads, utilities, other businesses and emergency responders. Murphy asked the group to submit a report to him by Sept. 30.

"…Research done in Philadelphia shows that a casino would consume 15 to 20 acres, Murphy said. By comparison, PNC Park sits on 14 acres…"
