Pittsburgh group demands casino benefits

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- As reported by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette: "After its debut partnership with Hill District residents and merchants last month, supporting their fight to get neighborhood investment from a new hockey arena, Pittsburgh UNITED has taken its strength-in-numbers pitch to the North Shore.

"It is rallying North Siders in a campaign to win good-paying jobs, green design and investment for public services from a new casino. It will present its wishes at today's meeting of the planning commission, which will consider a casino master plan.

"Pittsburgh UNITED is a coalition of 15 groups promoting the welfare of working families. It incorporated last fall on the premise that politics and development too often run a fast race as relay partners, leaving the needs of the greatest numbers in the dust.

"The coalitions are tied into the national Partnership for Working Families network, whose stance is this: If you're going to spend millions here, a portion of that investment must work to strengthen the community..."
