Pittsburgh Casino to be Sophisticated

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Pittsburgh's slot-machine casino should be housed in a "sophisticated," environmentally friendly building that draws tourists but does not harm its neighbors, the Pittsburgh Gaming Task Force said Thursday.

"The group accepted recommendations from its design subcommittee with a goal of incorporating the standards into zoning changes for city neighborhoods where a casino might locate.

"The members, appointed by Mayor Tom Murphy in March, also hope to have the design recommendations included in the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board's applications for the Pittsburgh license.

"The state board will issue licenses for 14 casinos in the state, including a stand-alone slots parlor in Pittsburgh. It expects to issue applications in November with a deadline for developers to respond by the end of December.

"…Although generally broad, the design standards seek to minimize the casino's negative impacts -- such as lighting, noise and traffic congestion -- on its neighbors. They also call for the casino operator to develop a site that fits with the city's character and some of its most recent construction…"
