Pittsburgh casino project uncertain28 July 2008PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: "...Pittsburgh's North Shore casino isn't yet on the market, but it might only be a matter of time before the property is peddled. The future of the $780 million project has been uncertain since construction was halted nearly a month ago. "Ah, but who is counting how long it's been since the cranes were stilled when contractors who hadn't been paid for months finally walked off the job? "Certainly not Chicago billionaire Neil Bluhm. "He's been too busy counting the days before the financially plagued casino project slips into bankruptcy if the state Gaming Control Board doesn't approve him assuming control of it. "...The deadline date is July 30, which has put the gambling board in a bit of a bind. "Its members don't want to hastily approve Bluhm taking over for developer-turned-pauper Don Barden, who couldn't come up with the scratch to build the slot machine parlor. "Nor do they want an unfinished casino sitting there as a constant reminder that they awarded the license to Barden in the first place. "...Bluhm was all doom and gloom when he addressed the gambling board Thursday. If the project goes bankrupt, he warned, the property could be sold to help pay off the $200 million debt Barden ran up while not building the casino..." |
