Pirates Owner Still Opposed to Slots Near Park

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy said yesterday an offer to build a 1,240-space parking garage and fund community assets with gambling revenues won't change his opposition to a proposed North Shore slots casino near PNC Park.

"McClatchy said he does not believe the $200 million slots casino and entertainment complex proposed by Pittsburgh parking czar Merrill Stabile would sit well with Major League Baseball, particularly one located next door to the ballpark.

"Nor does he believe the casino would be in keeping with the type of development the Pirates, the Steelers, and developer Continental Real Estate Cos. want on the North Shore. He also fears the teams would lose valuable parking space with the construction of the complex.

"…Although the Pirates, the Steelers and Equitable Resources have spoken out against the proposal, Stabile believes the casino, to be built on land he owns on General Robinson Street, ultimately could end up benefiting the teams and the North Shore.

"With the new parking garage, as well as the parking to be available at the casino, the teams will end up gaining space, not losing it, he said. He also said he would pay for the cost of having extra police to direct traffic.

"…Despite the heavyweights lined up against him, Stabile still believes he has a good chance to win the one state gambling license available for the stand-alone casino in Pittsburgh…"
