Philippines to Investigate Jueteng27 May 2005PHILIPPINES – As reported by the Manila Bulletin Online: "Administration lawmakers yesterday said the House is determined to push through with its investigation on the jueteng issue but appealed for an honest probe in aid of legislation and congressional oversight, and not a partisan witchhunt against officials allegedly responsible for the jueteng drive. "House Majority Leader Prospero Nograles and Davao Oriental Rep. Joel Mayo Almario, chairman of the House committee on games and amusements, said the resolution filed by Rep. Roilo Golez for a probe has to be acted upon. "Nograles and Almario said the House committee on public order and safety will not stop its hearings on Golez's resolution even with the ongoing probe of the justice department or the creation of an independent commission to investigate reports of unchecked jueteng operations nationwide. "…Nograles said President Arroyo herself would not stop Congress from performing its inquiry and oversight functions…" |
