Philippines Target Gambling Lords2 May 2005PHILIPPINES – As reported by the Manila Times: "House leaders on Friday emphasized the need for close coordination between the police and the Bureau of Internal Revenue running after jueteng lords who are also tax cheats. "Representatives Jesli Lapus of Tarlac and Joel Mayo Almario of Davao Oriental in a joint statement said the BIR should ask the police to help go after tax evaders among gambling lords. "…The statement said the BIR campaign to go after jueteng operators proves the government's determination to eradicate illegal gambling and to flush out government men accepting bribes. "…[Almario] said the campaign to file tax charges against jueteng lords, along with other tax cheats in government, is a timely development in light of the heightened antijueteng campaign." |
