Philippines Probes Arroyo Gambling Link

MANILA, Philippines – As reported by Reuters: "Philippine law-makers said on Monday they would begin this week an inquiry into allegations that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's family members received payments from syndicates running an illegal lottery.

"Arroyo has ordered a separate investigation and a crackdown on the numbers game called 'jueteng' in an attempt to counter opposition allegations that her family had benefited from the game.

"The accusations against her family echo those that brought down her predecessor, Joseph Estrada, in 2001, although analysts say it is too early to say whether the latest allegations will stick.

"…Arroyo's family say the allegations are just the latest attempt by the opposition, including forces loyal to the deposed president, to undermine the government…"
