Philippine's Pro Casino Forces Want Issue Cleared

PHILIPPINES -- As reported by the Baguio Sun-Star: "Councilors who voted for the casino measure here sought to clear issues relative to their approval of controversial gaming complex.

"Councilors Federico Mandapat Jr., Delfin Balajadia, Richard Cariño, Nicasio Apliping Jr., Rufino Panagan, Faustino Olowan, Elmer Datuin, Elmo Nevada and Antonio Tabora Jr. proposed a resolution seeking 'to inform the people of the antecedent facts and circumstances surrounding the controversy on the reopening of casino operations.'

"…At the city council session last Wednesday, proponents pushed for the measure's discussion without undergoing prior committee referral as a normal procedure of the body, sparking protest from the anti-casino group who sued for more time to study the measure.

"Councilors Braulio Yaranon and Edilberto Tenefrancia as well as other anti-casino members were protesting the hasty inclusion of the proposal and insisted that it be first referred to the proper committee as was the body's normal practice. They said the measure has to be studied carefully considering its contents.

"…The argument intensified when the sensitive topic of the alleged bribery was touched, prompting the two to further trade accusations until Yaranon posed a challenge to the seven councilors to undergo a lie detector test to prove that they did not receive bribe money as believed by many, according to him…"
