Philippines Police Calls for End to Illegal Gambling

25 November 2005

AKLAN, Philippines – (PRESS RELEASE) -- There will be no illegal gambling in Aklan if there are no bettors, according to Police Supt. William Macavinta when asked about the situation in Aklan as far as illegal gambling in this province is concerned, during a recent Kapihan program of the Philippine Information Agency here over RMN-DYKR where he was the invited guest.

PD Macavinta identified "loteng" and "ending" as the purported types of illegal gambling in Aklan. He called on the people to stop betting so illegal gambling would not flourish in the province.

Macavinta said there is no common financier of illegal gambling in Aklan. In the case of tong-its, a card game, he warned that those who would be caught doing it in public places would be apprehended, as what happened to a group found playing in a municipality here. "There is no future in gambling", he stressed.

On the current peace and order situation in the province, PD Macavinta said crimes committed were mostly against property and persons. There were no major sensational cases.

On the PNP's campaign against illegal drugs, Macavinta said their efforts were even commended by Gen. Ricardo De Leon for the continuous apprehension of drug pushers in the province.
