Philippine Tribes Oppose Casino Plan5 January 2004BAGUIO, Philippines – As reported by the Baguio Sun Star: "Indigenous people from the boundaries of Ilocos and Cordillera regions joined the local church sector in opposing the planned casino in Camp John Hay. "The Bago Cultural Society Inc., composed of village mates of Baguio Rep. Mauricio Domogan, said the City Council's endorsement of the casino was 'undue and improper', even though Domogan admitted that the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) is authorized to operate a casino in the country. "…Councilor Federico Mandapat Jr. said last week that councilors who maintain an anti-casino stand should join forces with the religious sector. He also asked Congress to amend existing laws governing the operations of casino, lotto and other forms of legal gambling in the city…" |
