Philippine Local Officials Directed to Support Gambling Campaign

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – As reported by the Philippine Star: "The regional office of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) here has directed all local chief executives to support the renewed all-out campaign against jueteng, or face sanctions.

"Renato Brion, DILG regional director, told The STAR that his directive is consistent with the DILG order issued during the time of Secretary Robert Barbers enjoining all mayors to lead the campaign against all forms of illegal gambling, including the illegal numbers game, in their respective localities.

"…On the same day, Padaca ordered the Isabela police to conduct an all-out campaign against jueteng despite appeals from several Isabela mayors to postpone the crackdown 'until after six months.'

"In response to Padaca's order, Senior Superintendent Napoleon Estilles, Isabela police director, ordered his men to conduct a no-let-up drive against the illegal numbers game in their turfs…"
