Philippine Groups Support Gambling Plan30 May 2005PHILIPPINES – As reported by the Sun Star Pamganga: "The League of Municipalities in the Philippines (LMP) has thrown its support to the move of the Pampanga Mayors League (PML) in its effort to eradicate all forms of illegal gambling in the country. "Mabalacat Mayor Marino 'Boking' Morales, who attended the National Directorate Meeting of the LMP last May 28 at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City, said the LMP has adopted the resolution of the PML supporting President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her move to stop all forms of illegal gambling, particularly the numbers-game jueteng. "Morales endorsed the PML resolution during the meeting in Cebu City even as LMP chair Ramon Guico Jr. had shown unequivocal support to President Arroyo's agenda. "The PML and LMP members had also urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) and concerned agencies to implement stricter laws against illegal gambling. The PNP hierarchy has reported that Luzon Island is now jueteng-free but expressed doubts on how long they could make the country free from the illegal numbers-game. "… Morales and Angeles City Mayor Carmelo Lazatin had broached the idea of incorporating the displaced workers on the government's Bingo 2-ball lottery, a numbers game similar to jueteng. The two had already proposed the idea to President Arroyo during a meeting at the Clark Special Economic Zone…" |
