Philippine Gambling Abolition Gains Support

PHILLIPINE – As reported by the Philippine Tribune: "The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) may well be a thing of the past, if the groundswell of support for its abolition at the House of Representatives hits a crescendo.

"Despite a group of administration congressmen's push to approve the extension of the Pagcor franchise for another 50 years, amid its illegal gaming status, since Pagcor has been found operating with a lapsed franchise since 2001, the Pagcor abolition group in the House says there are now about 30 lawmakers supporting the move to do away with Pagcor.

"Reps. Hermilando Mandanas of Batangas, Alan Peter Cayetano of Taguig and Pateros, Fredenil Castro of Capiz and Joel Villanueva of the partylist Citizens Battle Against Corruption yesterday said there are about 30 lawmakers who are now supporting the move to abolish the state-owned gambling firm.

"Sources also told the Tribune yesterday that while the retain Pagcor group is also working to get more congressmen to its side, the same group is said to be wary of the legal maneuvers that Mandanas may employ in questioning the revival of the Pagcor franchise.

"…Led by Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz and Lipa City Archbishop Ramon Arguelles, the church leaders pointed out that casinos do not have any beneficial effect on the nation…"
