Philippine Casino Plan Gains Supporters25 November 2003PHILIPPINES –As reported by the Baguio Sun-Star: "Baguio elders, including two more organizations, expressed support to the planned casino operation inside Camp John Hay amid opposition from various groups in the City, led by the Baguio-Benguet Vicariate. "…The latest groups to support the controversial casino plan are the Federation of Baguio Senior Citizens' Association (Fbaseca), the Federation of Parents and Teachers Association and the Azkho Barangay Vendors Association. "…The Baguio elders said the tax share of the City Government to be paid by the Philippine Amusement Gaming Corporations (Pagcor) is necessary to fund various barangay-based programs, including activities that would further promote their welfare. "They also assured that the casino proponent would be required to strictly observe the condition only casino members would be allowed to play. "…The parents and teachers association, for its part, claimed their group is aware the purpose of Pagcor is to help enhance the city's tourism and economic sector. "Officials of the Azkho Barangay Vendors group, on the other hand, said the operation of casino would pave the way for more employment to thousands of Baguio residents who belong to the ranks of the unemployed sector…" |
