Philadelphia senator switches sides

PHILADELIPHIA, Pennsylvania – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Philadelphia's rich and powerful state senator Vince Fumo has dropped his opposition to local zoning control of gambling casinos here.

"An amended Senate Bill 862, containing new ethics language and giving local control of casino zoning to both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, may be voted on by the Senate this week.

"Last week the House voted again to allow the state Gaming Control Board to make all zoning and land-use decisions about casinos in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

"Sen. Fumo has been the object of intense lobbying from neighborhood groups opposed to state control of casino zoning - a measure Governor Ed Rendell reportedly still supports.

"… The press release said Fumo continues to believe casinos should be opened as quickly as possible after their approval. NIMBY neighbors, the release declared, should not be able to use zoning regulations to slow down or stop the process…"
