Penny Slots Big in Detroit10 May 2004DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "Billboards on the way into downtown Detroit tout casinos' newest craze: penny slots. "Although nickel and quarter slot machines have been popular at Detroit casinos for years, some of the hottest new machines on the floor are the one-cent, two-cent and dime slot machines. "Greektown Casino added 1- and 2-cent slot machines to its lineup in the last month; MGM Grand Detroit added them a few months ago. MotorCity has had penny machines since January 2002, but over the weekend added a new line of 10-cent progressive machines, tied together to create a bigger jackpot. "'Throughout the industry, these lower-denomination games seem to be the trend,' said Phil Trofibio, director of slot operations for MotorCity Casino. Some new machines give players the choice of betting any denomination, say 7 cents, he said. "…For gamblers, the big draw of cheaper slots is that they can play longer with less funds. "…Don't expect to put real pennies into the new slot machines. The machines at all three casinos accept only tokens, greenbacks or paper tickets and pay out in tokens or tickets…" |
