Pennsylvania's Neighbors Eye Competition11 April 2005PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Philadelphia Daily News: 'Pennsylvania's entry into the lucrative gaming industry has prompted surrounding states to ponder the potential for lost profits. "Gambling proponents - elected officials and private investors - have proposed expanded gaming in New Jersey, West Virginia and Delaware. "Maryland and Ohio are considering getting into the industry. "But here's the safe bet: It will take a while to get moving. "The efforts in New Jersey, West Virginia and Delaware are stymied by politics. "In Maryland, Gov. Robert Ehrlich has failed for the third straight year to get a slot-machines plan through the state's legislature. "…In Pennsylvania, which last summer approved up to 61,500 slot machines in 14 venues, talk of adding table games to the new law is merely an exercise to get the debate moving. "…In Pennsylvania, the Gaming Control Board is drawing up regulations and drafting applications for slots licenses as some legislators suggest an amendment to add table games. "…Gaming Control Board Chairman Tad Decker says the board is not thinking about table games and is focusing only on slots…" |
