Pennsylvania Troopers File To Do Own Background Checks

PENNSYLVANAIA – As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Pennsylvania's nascent slots industry could be open to organized crime unless state police are allowed to conduct background checks on gambling companies, the state troopers union said in a lawsuit Monday.

"'There's no doubt organized crime and gaming go hand-in-hand,' said Sgt. Bruce Edwards, president of the Pennsylvania State Troopers Association. 'At the very start of this, it's very important everything is done right and we keep this as clean as possible.'

"The union filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court, seeking to have the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board give troopers the work doing background checks rather than outsource it to private companies.

"Edwards faulted Gov. Ed Rendell for not hiring 90 troopers last year, which he said would have given the state enough troopers to do the checks.

"…For months, a disagreement has simmered between the board and state police over who should perform the background checks. The seven-member gambling board last month authorized its staff to negotiate no-bid contracts with three private firms, and to seek others through a competitive bidding process…"
