Pennsylvania Township Can Win Big on Slots

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Tiny Wharton Township, with 4,100 residents, figures to make a killing if slot machines come to this Fayette County community.

"Nestled among two-lane roads in the rolling Laurel Mountains, the community could end up with a slice of Las Vegas if Nemacolin Woodlands Resort lands one of the state's two licenses for resort casinos.

"The resort sits within Wharton's 92 square miles and provides much of the community's $1.3 million annual budget, said Laura Savage, Wharton's secretary-treasurer.

"With slots, the township could increase its budget by half.

"…Nemacolin Woodlands and Seven Springs ski resort in Somerset County are the only two applicants vying for the two resort casino licenses. The other casino licenses allow up to 5,000 slot machines, but the resorts can have up to 500.

"The state has one license for each bidder, but nothing requires the Gaming Control Board to give out every license. Regulators hope to award seven casino licenses to horse racing tracks by August, but might not give out the others until early 2007…"
