Pennsylvania Town Not Hustling to Form Gambling Board2 June 2004BENSALEM, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Bucks County Courier Times: "Bensalem has an environmental advisory board, a community development board, a park board and a commission to study the number and placement of shade trees. "But even as construction begins on a slots casino at Philadelphia Park racetrack in Bensalem, no public advisory board has been formed to weigh the impact on traffic, crime and property values. Some residents on both sides of the political aisle say they're confounded by the absence of such a board or committee. "Bensalem is unlikely to have any say in gambling legalization while legislators debate the issue in Harrisburg. Yet several residents said they'd like a township referendum, if only to gauge public support for slots. "…Democrat and frequent critic Scott Blacker asked Bensalem officials to form such a committee during several public council meetings over the past year. Blacker said he supports gambling and wants a seat on the gambling board. "… 'What would this panel do?' responded council President Joseph Pilieri. 'What specifically would they study? I'm not against the idea of a study, but I need to know what they would do.'…" |
