Pennsylvania Slots Cap Could Be Raised

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Evening Sun: "Several House members vowed Monday to push for more money for townships where slots parlors are built, saying the local governments will need it to pay for police and other costs.

"The House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee met to discuss a bill that would lift a cap on the amount a host municipality will get from slots. Many of the committee members said the local governments deserve more.

"The bill was authored by Rep. Ron Marsico (R-Dauphin), who represents the district where Penn National Race Course is planning a slots venue.

"…Current law states that a township gets 2 percent of slots revenue or $10 million, whichever is greater. But it also caps the township's share at half its annual budget.

"…While Marsico's bill would eliminate the cap, some lawmakers suggested Monday that it be raised. Eliminating the cap would surely draw protests from architects of the slots bill, who have said a cap is needed to prevent small townships from reaping a massive windfall of up to $10 million…"
