Pennsylvania Slot Bill to be Rewritten

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Pennsylvania Evening Sun: "State Rep. Ron Miller wants to use money from slot machines to shore up the Pennsylvania Lottery if the lottery loses money after slots parlors open in Pennsylvania.

"So the Jacobus Republican sponsored a bill, then agreed to wrap it into an omnibus bill making several changes to the state's five-month-old slots law.

"Easy enough?

"Nope. Bet again.

"Republicans and Democrats are haggling over whether the bill became law or not, and Miller said he's going back to the drawing board with his effort. He's re-writing the bill to re-introduce it when the Legislature convenes again next year.

"Gov. Ed Rendell vetoed the slots changes last week, listing several complaints with the bill. But Republicans say the Democratic governor vetoed the wrong version of the bill.

"…The matter is expected to end up in court, and Miller said he's sponsoring his bill again because he doesn't want to gamble with the courts.

"The slots law earmarks the state's share of proceeds to property tax cuts, but Miller predicts slots will draw players away from the lottery. The lottery, which reported record sales of more than $2.3 billion last year, funds senior's programs such as prescription drug plans and property tax rebates…"
