Pennsylvania Police Want Casino Unit

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pennsylvania Times Leader: "If slot machines are legalized at the Downs at Pocono and other locations around the state, organized crime is sure to follow, state police say.

"That's why the state police want to get ahead of the crime bosses by forming a unit dedicated exclusively toward criminal investigations, background checks and regulatory control over what could be an explosion in legalized gambling in Pennsylvania.

"…[State Police Commissioner Col. Jeffrey] Miller has proposed setting up a 279-person specialized unit that would be dedicated to gaming enforcement. Half of the unit would be comprised of troopers who have criminal investigation experience, while the other half would be civilian agents trained by the state police to enforce the gaming regulations and detect potential fraud or theft…"
