Pennsylvania Governor Makers New Slot Pitch

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pennsylvania Post-Gazette: "In an effort to jump-start his stalled program of property tax relief, Gov. Ed Rendell today proposed new legislation to legalize slot machines at up to 12 venues in Pennsylvania -- eight racetracks and four nontrack sites, one in Pittsburgh, two in Philadelphia and one still to be decided by a new gaming board.

"Rendell admitted he hasn't yet reached a consensus with General Assembly leaders on the controversial plan, which he claimed would provide $1 billion a year for statewide property tax relief.

"If the full $1 billion is generated from gambling revenue -- a figure not everyone agrees on -- Rendell said the average homeowner would see $339 a year in property tax reduction.

"Rendell called for establishing a seven-member Gaming Control Board which would approve licenses for up to 3,000 slot machines at each of the 12 locations.

"…Rendell said his proposal doesn't include a casino run by an Indian tribe…"
