Pennsylvania Gaming Board Salaries Set

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – (PRESS RELEASE) -- The Commonwealth's Executive Board today announced that it has established annual salaries for members of the newly created Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, which will regulate gaming in the Commonwealth.

The annual salary for the Chairman of the Gaming Control Board will be $150,000, and the annual salary for six other board members will be $145,000.

The Gaming Control Board will oversee all licensing and operations of the gaming venues, including:

-- Issuing, denying, renewing, revoking, or suspending licenses or permits.

-- Enforcing the state gaming law by, among other things, examining witnesses and issuing subpoenas and document requests.

-- Developing and implementing an affirmative action plan.

-- Requiring that licensees submit financial reports.

-- Ensuring that slot machines are properly inspected and certified.

-- Requiring that anyone under 21 years of age not be permitted to use slot machines.

-- Ensuring that the Department of Revenue and Pennsylvania State police use their full enforcement powers to protect Pennsylvania citizens.

-- Conducting open proceedings in accordance with Pennsylvania law.

Four members of the Gaming Control Board have been named and are currently undergoing Pennsylvania State Police background investigations before taking their seats on the board:

-- Francis Friel, Chairman, appointed by Governor Edward G. Rendell.

-- Sanford Rivers, appointed by Governor Rendell.

-- John W. Marhsall III, appointed by Speaker of the House of Representatives John Perzel.

-- William P. Conaboy, appointed by Senate Minority Leader Robert Mellow.

Act 71 of 2004, the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, established the Gaming Control Board and stipulated that the salaries be set by the Executive Board, of which Governor Rendell is Chairman.

The other members of the Executive Board are Secretary of Agriculture Dennis Wolff; Secretary of Banking William Schenck; Secretary of Conservation and Natural Resources Michael DiBerardinis; Secretary of Environmental Protection Kathleen McGinty; Secretary of Public Welfare Estelle Richman and Secretary of Revenue Gregory Fajt. Secretary of Administration Robert Barnett serves as Secretary of the Board.
