Pennsylvania Gaming Board Head Steps Down

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pennsylvania Inquirer: "Francis P. Friel, the governor's choice to lead the state gambling board, will step down today amid growing controversy over several alleged misdeeds in his past, a top official in the Rendell administration said last night.

"Friel's expected resignation comes as a blow to Rendell, who announced with much fanfare the appointment of the former Philadelphia police officer. His departure from the Gaming Control Board, which was set to begin work next month, could delay the introduction of slot machines in the state.

"In recent weeks Friel has come under attack for events in his past, including misrepresenting his academic credentials while testifying in 2001 at a Connecticut hearing for a boxing promoter with alleged mob ties.

"…Rendell has said publicly that he stood behind Friel pending the outcome of the background check, but yesterday the administration was researching possible replacements, sources familiar with the process said.

"Among the candidates to replace Friel is Superior Court Judge Stephen J. McEwen Jr., the court's president judge emeritus. McEwen served in the 1970s as the Delaware County District Attorney…"
