Pennsylvania Gambling Opponents Rally22 June 2004PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer: "As lawmakers work toward an agreement that would legalize slot machines in Pennsylvania, gambling opponents gathered at the state Capitol yesterday in an attempt to stop the momentum building for the bill. "But even some speaking at the rally conceded that the effort comes late in the debate and is unlikely to work. "…Michael Geer, president of the Pennsylvania Family Institute, which helped organize the antigambling rally, said he was not discouraged. "…One outstanding issue is a disagreement over whether Penn National Gaming Inc. should be allowed to handle security at two gambling parlors even though it holds licenses at two racetracks. "Many lawmakers have said they expect to see approval of 14 slot parlors, including at seven or eight racetracks, two resort parlors available to guests only, three stand-alone parlors (two in Philadelphia, one in Pittsburgh), and one or two parlors in undetermined locations. "Also at issue is whether the bill will contain a provision allowing table games at racetracks. "…The Rev. Jesse Brown, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Northeast Philadelphia and executive director of the National Association of African Americans for Positive Imagery, said the bill would destroy his community…" |
